Welcome to the first blog post from DoStix!

As you may know, DoStix were created by Greg Luna: trained chef, professional food stylist, and my husband.  Several times a year Greg finds himself elbow deep in cookie recipes for the work he does for book and magazine photography.  Over the years he wondered why there wasn’t a product available to him for making cookie dough, pie crust, and other baking doughs a perfect thickness.  For photography these baked items need to look perfect so in 2010 he decided to go for it and created DoStix.  We’ve both learned a lot and have enjoyed the interactions with DoStix customers who love the product.




I know the product is great but I have a confession to make- I have never used DoStix.  It’s safe to say I’m no wizard in the kitchen, although my skills have improved since I met Greg.  When it comes to baking, I usually stick to a drop cookie or brownies because I get frustrated with how more complicated recipes turn out.  Know this- the recipes are not to blame.  Allow me to share a story with you. 

A few years ago I wanted to make some dog-shaped frosted sugar cookies around the holidays.  I got really excited, bought my ingredients, and started making a huge mess in the kitchen (that’s my cooking style).  I rolled out the dough and put the first round in the oven.  Sure enough, some of the poor little puppies came out burned while others came out doughy.  I was frustrated so my first reaction is to blame Greg for making it look so easy.  The situation deteriorated to me blaming the entire food styling profession and Greg finishing the cookies for me.

That’s why I’m writing this blog.  I want to use Greg’s experience and my determination to improve everyone’s baking skills.  I’ll use professional food styling tips but make them useful to the rest of us who struggle from time to time (or all the time) in the baking arts.    I’m going to start with some cookies in my next post but I’d love to hear what recipes you struggle with so I can give them a try.  My hope is to cover a bit of everything in the blog- sweet, savory, craft, anything!  Mission control will be our home kitchen and don’t be surprised if you see a cat or two along the way.

Are the DoStix made out of wood or plastic?
